Recently, we wrote about a new production vehicle to be introduced by Tata Motors, the Megapixel that will hit the 100 kilometers per liter mark. It seems a bunch of college students aren't happy and decided to go one up. It isn't a production vehicle but what they were able to achieve is commendable... 240 kilometers per liter!
As part of Shell's Eco-marathon, Team Inferno from Sir M Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology (MVIT) has developed a single seater prototype that achieves this incredible mileage. The extraordinary mileage is achieved with a modified Bajaj engine, aluminium chassis, electronic fuel injection, aerodynamic design, direct transmission and other factors. The prototype uses glass-fiber reinforced plastic for its outer body and can race up to 60 kilometers per hour. The car, named Drona, will compete with cars developed by 150 other teams from Asia in the Shell Eco-marathon, scheduled to be held from July 4 to 7, 2012 at Sepang International Circuit (the Formula 1 track) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. They are sure going to have their hands full considering the number of entries into the competition and the results from other regions thus far.
On the subject of eco-friendly prototypes, we would recommend checking out the Shell Eco-marathon challenge. Why do you ask? Team Microjoule from France mastered the new urban circuit at the European leg of the competition to achieve the equivalent of 2,833 kilometres on one liter of fuel (gasoline in this case)!
