Amphibious cars have been around for a while. But remember the cartoon the Jetsons, where they flew around in little spaceships that looked like cars? Well, that is about to become a reality very soon. Terrafugia, a company based in Massachusetts has developed a street legal airplane. The production prototype of the Transition Street Legal Airplane completed its successful first flight at Plattsburgh International Airport in Plattsburgh, NY on March 23, 2012. The Transition’s first flight reached an altitude of 1400’ above the ground and lasted eight minutes while staying in the vicinity of Plattsburgh International Airport. The same vehicle has also successfully conducted an initial drive and conversion testing.
Wouldn't you like to fly around to escape that frustrating rush hour traffic? And get 35 miles per gallon (14.9 kms per liter) when you do decide to drive around town? You can with an anticipated base price of $279,000. Bear in mind you will also need a pilot's license and 20 hours of flight time in addition to your driver's license to fly this puppy. If you really think about it, that is a cheaper than owning your private jet. A LOT cheaper. It is still in the prototype stage, but this development is a big step in the right direction.
