Critiqued: Mirattal

It looks like remakes (albeit in different languages) are the norm these days, especially if you are looking for a good rate of return on your investment. Mirattal is a remake of a highly successful Telugu film, Dhee. We haven't seen the original so we can't really comment on it, but having seen the Tamil version, we have to say that it was quite enjoyable. Think about any possible scenario you can inject comedy into, and that will give you an idea of what this film is all about. Sure you get the range of emotions that any South Indian film offers (love, anger, betrayal etc.) but they have managed to lighten up any given scenario.

Directed by R. Madhesh, it features a relatively new cast (with the exception of Prabhu) in Vinay Rai and Sharmila Mandre in the lead roles. Vinay is joined by Santhanam who has been on fire lately and is in pretty much every single film that is a hit. Their combination as in most films in which Santhanam is the side kick, works well and they play well off each other (although we must say the Arya, Santhanam combination is the best). They are also joined by Pradeep Rawat who is making a name for himself down south in villainous roles and of course Prabhu, who also happens to be the producer of the film. Adding to the laughter are long time screen presences, Pandiarajan and Uma Padmanabhan who are absolutely hilarious as Vinay's parents. 

If you are expecting anything other than comedy then this film is definitely not for you. Yes it does have some action and a couple of catchy tunes but all that is definitely overshadowed by the comedy throughout the film. Considering it is a completely comic film, we aren't entirely sure if it worth watching in the theaters. You might be better off just hanging out at home with the family and friends and popping in the DVD on a weekend. You'll definitely enjoy it more.
