Rolls-Royce: An Inside Look

The name is synonymous with quality craftsmanship and heritage. I mean, the Queen of England rolls around in a... Rolls. That has to count for something! In all seriousness, no auto manufacturer oozes comfort and craftsmanship like Rolls-Royce. The Maybach and Bugatti are close, but they are not Rolls-Royce. They started the whole luxury car segment. Rolls-Royce Limited was created over a famous lunch in May 1904. Henry Royce, a successful engineer, struck a deal with Charles Rolls, owner of one of the first car dealerships. The rest is history. The ensuing series of cars broke the mold for engineering and craftsmanship.

Rolls-Royce is based at the Goodwood plant in West Sussex, England. The factory is located across from the historic Goodwood Circuit in Goodwood, West Sussex, England. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of BMW (who purchased them in 1998) and is the current producer of Rolls-Royce branded automobiles. Just to show how serious they take quality construction, the entire dash on a Rolls is a single piece. This is to reduce the squeaks and rattles that invariably occur when the dash is made from multiple pieces. And they even have master woodworkers who create, sand, polish and shine all the wooden pieces (of which there are many) in the car.
