Intel. In a smartphone. In India. Now that's a first.

Intel processors are almost synonymous with desktops and laptops. The next obvious move for Intel would be to foray into the smartphone market. And that's exactly what is going to happen. Intel announced Thursday that the first Intel powered smartphone, the Xolo X900, will be available for sale on April 23rd. In India. And only in India... for now.

The Xolo X900, made by Lava International is based off of an Intel reference design. The phone is powered by a single core Intel Medfield chip that clocks in at 1.6GHz. The Xolo X900′s also features an 8MP camera, a 4" LCD touchscreen, and will run on Android's Gingerbread operating system, with a scheduled upgrade to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) shortly after its release. The phone also supports 1080p HD video playback and offers long battery life - at least for audio playback, which hits 45 hours. As for talk time and browsing, battery life is average: eight hours and five hours, respectively.

Intel has announced that several more Medfield processor based phones will roll out in the coming year. The company has partnerships with Orange, Motorola, ZTE, and Lenovo. Lenovo’s phone will launch in China in May and Orange’s phone will launch in Europe this summer. Motorola’s and ZTE’s phones will launch sometime in the second half of 2012. There’s still no word on where Motorola and ZTE will launch its phones.

The Xolo X900 will go on sale in India on April 23rd at a cost of Rs. 22,000 (~$440).
