Critiqued: The Iron Lady

I've always been a Meryl Streep fan. Of all the actresses currently in Hollywood I think Julie Andrews and Meryl are the best. Helen Mirren and Judi Dench come a very close second. Having seen a lot of videos of Margaret Thatcher growing up, I was very intrigued when The Iron Lady was announced. I finally got a chance to watch it and boy oh boy, what an amazing performance did Meryl produce. The story is nothing to write home about, I mean, it is about her life. A grocer's daughter, father's a politician and teaches his daughter all the good values, she in turn wants to dedicate her life to public service. The film follows her life including the unfortunate turn of events wherein Mrs. Thatcher was diagnosed with dementia.

Meryl Streep's role was simply awesome. The accent, the mannerisms et al were just spot on. I had to do a double take and realized that I was watching an actress and not the real person. The make up was also phenomenal. I am not surprised the Oscar for best actress and make up went for this film. It is a shame and disheartening that someone as brilliant as Mrs. Thatcher has been brought to her knees by the old age and dementia. The flashes of brilliance are still evident once in a while and the film is a great tribute to one of the (if not the) most vociferous female politicians of all time.

I think Streep's performance will go down as one of the best of all time and definitely recommend watching the film!
