The Datsun is back!

Nissan has announced a plan to revive Datsun as a low cost marque, 31 years after removing it from its line up. The Japanese carmaker said the brand's reputation for value and reliability would help it in emerging markets. Datsun models will be sold in the up and coming markets of Indonesia, Russia and India from 2014.

Nissan quit using the Datsun brand in 1981, but earlier this month announced plans to revive the moniker for cars and trucks for emerging markets. "It's a green car, affordable car, small displacement, high local content," Ghosn said of the Datsun. "It's going to be a generous car." A resurrection of Datsun would follow a growing trend to bring back heritage nameplates, including Toyota's AE86, or "Hachi-roku" sports car, Chrysler's Dodge Dart and Fiat's 500.

Sales are slated to begin in 2014 and by the looks of it, the cars will be produced in Indonesia. For all the car fanatics, this is great news since the Datsun was always the affordable option for amateur racing and do it yourself at home modifications (remember the 510 or the 240Z). Bring it on Nissan we say. The world can definitely use your expertise, reliability and heritage.
