We have been playing around with quite a few Ultrabooks that are currently in the market, and the HP Folio 13 is one of the most economical versions out there. But don't think HP has skimped on the goodies just to keep the price low. Despite its industrial looking design much like the HP EliteBook, it is packed with enough fire power to get the job done.
The Folio is a little on the pudgy side for an Ultrabook at 3.3 lbs or about 1.5 kgs but the increased weight is not that noticeable. The 13.3-inch display offers the same 1366 x 768 resolution as most Ultrabooks and is quite sharp and bright (as long as you keep the settings to the maximum level). There are other Ultrabooks that offer better resolution (MacBook Air and the Asus UX31), but the offered resolution is livable with. It also comes with a very nice and smooth backlit keyboard and the touchpad which is becoming a standard across the HP range. Both work nicely and the touchpad doesn't have the sensitivity issue (laggy response) we have noticed among a few other brands and even other models in the HP family. The built in Dolby Advanced Audio speakers are also quite powerful and can fill a normal sized room with crisp music.
Standard features include 2 USB ports, WiFi, an ethernet port, 1 HDMI output, memory card reader (missing on other Ultrabooks) and bluetooth. Our machine came equipped with a 128 GB solid state drive, 4 GB RAM and the core i5 processor. The machine boots up in under 30 seconds and resumes from standby in under 3. That's not bad at all. What did blow us away was the battery life. We got almost 8 hours on a single charge and this is better than most of the other brands that we checked out. You probably won't enjoy playing graphically intensive games on this machine, but it will more than fit your day to day needs. And with the cheapest price of all the Ultrabooks we have seen in India, it is a bargain with all that is offered.
